Snowman Mike Talks Texas and Moscow Snow

Record Snow in Moscow, Dallas Hit with MORE Snow

Let’s start with Texas, because it’s not just Dallas.  Midland/Odessa and south to Marfa is getting snow this morning.  It’s snowing in San Angelo and Abilene.  Waco is expecting snow.  These are areas that rarely see snow and some are having a second or third round this winter (as AccuWeather predicted).  Dallas only needs 2 inches from this storm to break their all-time record.

All of this southern snow has more to do with El Nino than global cooling, but if global warming were really real, and snow is going to be a “rare and exciting event,” wouldn’t all of this snow be falling as rain??

Meanwhile, even cold places are cold and snowy by their standards.  Moscow has 2 feet of snow on the ground.  Apparently that is a lot even for them.

AccuWeather predicts cold snowy weather for South, relief for Upper Midwest and Northern Plains.

miniWINTER2010USOverview

Rockies East... Look Out!

Joe Bastadri is a very respected Meteorologist for AccuWeather and he is out with the official AccuWeather Winter forecast.  I’ll let you read the details for yourself.  I do have a few observations (opinions).  Of course we’ll all find out together if it comes true.  (video:  Joe Bastardi explains his Winter Forecast)

The biggest news here is the fading El Nino and the weather that usually brings.  If I am reading this right, this is what Bastardi is largely basing his forecast on.  Why is El Nino fading?  Because the Pacific Decadal Oscillation has flipped to it’s cold phase.  Since the Pacific is cooling, El Nino is having trouble sticking around.  The Pacific Decadal Oscillation usually spends about 30 years in each phase.  We only have about 27 to go before the Pacific flips back to a warm phase :-)

Fading El Nino’s, I am hearing, usually mean cold and lots of snow for New England.  Bastardi is hitting this hard with a forecast of heavy snow all up and down the Eastern Seaboard.  Fans of cold and snow in the south will be happy with this forecast as well.  Bastardi says there should be snow and ice from Dallas to Atlanta.  Not only that, but the snow in Texas could fall as far south as San Antonio!

Some of the best news here is the forecast rain and snow for drought stricken California.  I’m happy too (if this comes true) with the forecast of heavy mountain snow in Arizona.  Nearby Mt. Lemmon is fun to visit after a couple of feet of snow falls.  This usually means nice cool rains for Tucson proper and maybe some snow too.

The Upper Midwest and Northern Plains are really hoping Joe is right.  They have been hammered with cold and snowy Winters the last three years and Summers have been non-existent.  Still, “not as cold nor snowy” leaves room for plenty of cold and snowy.  This is the part of the forecast that I am most skeptical.  With global cooling setting in like it is, I’m thinkin’ it could be frigid up north.  Fall sure has started very cold.

We will see!
