Stop Global Cooling Now!

The Mini Ice Age Starts Here

Next stop, Ice Age?

An excellent analysis in the Mail Online.  The article details the natural cycles of both the Atlantic and Pacific Multi-Decadal Oscillations.  Something I’ve written a lot about on this site for over a year now.  The article points to research being done that shows when the ocean currents are in warm phase, the Earth experiences warming.  When they are in cold phase, well, you get the idea.

The bitter winter afflicting much of the Northern Hemisphere is only the start of a global trend towards cooler weather that is likely to last for 20 or 30 years, say some of the world’s most eminent climate scientists.

Their predictions – based on an analysis of natural cycles in water temperatures in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans – challenge some of the global warming orthodoxy’s most deeply cherished beliefs, such as the claim that the North Pole will be free of ice in summer by 2013.

According to the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre in Colorado, Arctic summer sea ice has increased by 409,000 square miles, or 26 per cent, since 2007 – and even the most committed global warming activists do not dispute this.

Did you see that? Read it again.

Funny.  I don’t remember hearing that on my telly.  Is it possible that the American Networks are holding out on us? Just wondering out loud, but I digress.

The conclusion of the scientists interviewed in the article?  While the rise in CO2 levels may play a part in rising temperatures, it’s a very small part.  Mostly the climate is driven by natural forces. They say the ocean currents could be as much as 50% responsible.

Prof Latif, who leads a research team at the renowned Leibniz  Institute at Germany’s Kiel University, has developed new methods for measuring ocean temperatures 3,000ft beneath the surface, where the cooling and warming cycles start.

He and his colleagues predicted the new cooling trend in a paper published in 2008 and warned of it again at an IPCC conference in Geneva last September.

Last night he told The Mail on Sunday: ‘A significant share of the warming we saw from 1980 to 2000 and at earlier periods in the 20th Century was due to these cycles – perhaps as much as 50 per cent.

‘They have now gone into reverse, so winters like this one will become much more likely. Summers will also probably be cooler, and all this may well last two decades or longer.

The article doesn’t address the fact that the Sun is putting out a lot less energy.  The Old Farmer’s Almanac had an article last year that speculated what the affects might be of both the Pacific and now the Atlantic in cold phases combined with a quiet Sun.  They mentioned the possibility of a mini ice age.  There is at least one prominent Russian scientist who believes that is possible as well.  The article in the Mail reminisces about the mid-70s when many scientists were also thinking that way… and blaming man:

Prof Tsonis said that the period from 1915 to 1940 saw a strong warm mode, reflected in rising temperatures. But from 1940 until the late Seventies, the last MDO cold-mode era, the world cooled, despite the fact that carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere continued to rise.

He recalled that towards the end of the last cold mode, the world’s media were preoccupied by fears of freezing.

For example, in 1974, a Time magazine cover story predicted ‘Another Ice Age’, saying: ‘Man may be somewhat responsible – as a result of farming and fuel burning [which is] blocking more and more sunlight from reaching and heating the Earth.’

Prof Tsonis said: ‘Perhaps we will see talk of an ice age again by the early 2030s, just as the MDOs shift once more and temperatures begin to rise.’

I know I harp on this, but it matters.  Cap & Trade and global climate treaties to stop global warming are the wrong approach.  They will cripple already ailing economies and do nothing but redistribute wealth and give power to bureaucrats at the U.N.  It’s hard to know someone’s motives, but it does fit that perhaps that is the real aim.  Not to “save the planet,” (such a lofty sounding goal) but rather to manufacture an issue and use it as a power grab.  Thankfully all of this cold weather is giving a lot of people pause and may help thwart those evil plans.  That is why I am all for global cooling!

AccuWeather predicts cold snowy weather for South, relief for Upper Midwest and Northern Plains.

miniWINTER2010USOverview

Rockies East... Look Out!

Joe Bastadri is a very respected Meteorologist for AccuWeather and he is out with the official AccuWeather Winter forecast.  I’ll let you read the details for yourself.  I do have a few observations (opinions).  Of course we’ll all find out together if it comes true.  (video:  Joe Bastardi explains his Winter Forecast)

The biggest news here is the fading El Nino and the weather that usually brings.  If I am reading this right, this is what Bastardi is largely basing his forecast on.  Why is El Nino fading?  Because the Pacific Decadal Oscillation has flipped to it’s cold phase.  Since the Pacific is cooling, El Nino is having trouble sticking around.  The Pacific Decadal Oscillation usually spends about 30 years in each phase.  We only have about 27 to go before the Pacific flips back to a warm phase :-)

Fading El Nino’s, I am hearing, usually mean cold and lots of snow for New England.  Bastardi is hitting this hard with a forecast of heavy snow all up and down the Eastern Seaboard.  Fans of cold and snow in the south will be happy with this forecast as well.  Bastardi says there should be snow and ice from Dallas to Atlanta.  Not only that, but the snow in Texas could fall as far south as San Antonio!

Some of the best news here is the forecast rain and snow for drought stricken California.  I’m happy too (if this comes true) with the forecast of heavy mountain snow in Arizona.  Nearby Mt. Lemmon is fun to visit after a couple of feet of snow falls.  This usually means nice cool rains for Tucson proper and maybe some snow too.

The Upper Midwest and Northern Plains are really hoping Joe is right.  They have been hammered with cold and snowy Winters the last three years and Summers have been non-existent.  Still, “not as cold nor snowy” leaves room for plenty of cold and snowy.  This is the part of the forecast that I am most skeptical.  With global cooling setting in like it is, I’m thinkin’ it could be frigid up north.  Fall sure has started very cold.

We will see!

New Study Says Global Warming (and cooling) is Natural

Who knew?!  Oh, yeah.  We did.

In case you are still on the fence, here is a bit more information to consider.  Seems that years with El Nino are warmer.  Years without are cooler.  When there is volcanic activity on the planet it’s just cooler either way!

Here’s a link to an excellent blog analysis of the study.  Here’s an excerpt:

“The surge in global temperatures since 1977 can be attributed to a 1976 climate shift in the Pacific Ocean that made warming El Niño conditions more likely than they were over the previous 30 years and cooling La Niña conditions less likely” says corresponding author de Freitas.

“We have shown that internal global climate-system variability accounts for at least 80% of the observed global climate variation over the past half-century. It may even be more if the period of influence of major volcanoes can be more clearly identified and the corresponding data excluded from the analysis.”

That condition in the Pacific that made El Nino more likely and La Nina less likely?  The Pacific Decadal Oscilation flipped to a warm phase.  At the same time, the Sun entered a more active period.  No wonder it was almost as hot from the mid 80′s to 1998 as it was in the 30s and 40s.  Almost.

Now that the Pacific Decadal Oscilation has flipped back to a cold phase (just 2 or 3 years ago) and the Sun is very quiet, expect colder years ahead.   No wonder this may be the coldest Summer on record in parts of the Midwest this year.  If a volcano or two decides to get active it may get even colder in the next few decades.

Oh No… Alaskan Glaciers Grow!

One cool summer after a cold winter does not mean that Global Warming is officially over.  However, combined with all of the evidence I have outlined over the past two years on this blog I’d say probably.  After all, that’s what the measurements say.  Your help is needed more than ever to reverse this dangerous trend.

I found another article this morning that is a bit unsettling.  Seems that some scientist in Alaska monitoring that states glaciers have noticed in increase in the size of said glaciers.  I wonder if they’ll stay on the payroll after revealing such finding that fly in the face of conventional wisdom.  While world governments are trying to cool the planet this is more evidence that we should be working hard to do just the opposite!    Here’s the link.

Basically, the scientist in the article is saying that a lot of cold and snow last winter combined with a really cool summer this summer has caused glaciers in Alaska to grow since last year.

What the article doesn’t predict is which way they are likely to go from here.  Now that the Pacific Decadal Oscillation has switched to a cold phase (after 30 years in a warm phase), and now that the Sun has become much quieter, we can expect an extended cold snap.  Our only hope to reverse this trend is to do everything we can to increase greenhouse gases of every kind (it is greenhouse gases that are changing the climate, right?)  Write your congressmen and women, Senator’s, President’s.  We MUST fire up every coal plant possible.

If we don’t act now, we risk having the rest of the planet looking like Alaska.  No one wants that, do they?

Old Farmer’s Almanac Prediction – Long Term Cooling

Old Farmers Almanac says bundle up

Old Farmers Almanac says bundle up

The 2009 Edition is out.  I had the fun task of interviewing one of the editors.  Turns out the Almanac’s famous weather prediction for this Winter is colder for much of the nation.  Indeed some of the country is expected to be MUCH colder!

In addition, in this edition, the meteorologist for the Almanac says that we (the whole planet) are in for a LONG TERM cooling period!  Why?  For the exact reasons I’ve been warning about here.  The Sun has already entered a less active period.  Solar scientists look at solar cycles and predict that the Sun will be quiet for the next few decades.  Historically that has meant colder weather.

Another thing that came up during my interview with The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the oceans currents.  Specifically, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation.  If you have been reading this blog then you know I have been talking about the Pacific Decadal Oscillation for over a year now.  The Old Farmer’s Almanac says it has now flipped to a cold phase.  This will contribute to colder and drier conditions along the west coast and will contribute to colder temperatures in not just Alaska, but much of the country for the next few decades!  We must act now to reverse this trend if that is even possible.  While the government is trying to cool us off we should be doing everything possible to warm things up!

There is a similar current in the Atlantic.  The Atlantic Multi-Decadal Oscillation.  It is currently (get it?  CURRENT-ly) in a warm phase.  It’s why Dr. Grey and others have been talking about a 30 year period of high hurricane activity.  I guess we are 10 years or so in.  What The Old Farmer’s Almanac and others are saying is once the Atlantic Multi-Decadal Oscillation flips to a cold phase, it’s going to get REALLY cold!  One Russian scientist is so sure this is going to happen that he has a bet with a fellow scientist.  The Russian is betting that the temps from 2012 to 2017 will be colder then temps between 1998 to 2003.

Here’s where you and I come in.  Please PLEASE please trade in your fuel efficient car for a big gas guzzling (and much safer, by the way) SUV.  Be sure to rabbit start every time the light turns green, and drive a little over the speed limit.  Not only will you add an ounce or two of wonderful CO2 to the atmosphere, it’s FUN!

Cool Summer

in Alaska.  The Anchorage Daily News reports it could be the COLDEST SUMMER EVER in Anchorage!  The Weather Service says it’s La Nina’s fault and when it fades temps should return to average or above.  We will see.  This blog and others have been talking about a cooler Sun.  If that’s true, look for a COLD Winter in a lot of places and more La Nina’s now that the Pacific Decadal Oscillation has flipped to it’s cold phase.

Chillin’ in Alaska

Snow in Arizona!

Snow in Arizona!

Here’s the article. It’s in the Anchorage Daily News.  Seems like it’s been a cooler than normal Summer.  The dangerous Global Warming theory says we should be getting warmer, but clearly it’s cooling off.  Perhaps this will help convince you to Stop Global Cooling Now!

The guy from the National Weather Service does explain that while below normal, this dreary cool Summer is not that far out of the ordinary (yet).  It seems more dramatic since the last two Summers were sunny and warm compared to normal.  Still, only two days above 70 so far?!  Normal for an Anchorage Summer is 14, so there is a long way to go.  Yeah.  They’re chillin’ in Anchorage.

Here’s what’s really interesting in this article to me:

He thinks the strong forces of La Nina are the culprit. La Nina, a phenomenon that causes ocean temperatures to dip below average, kicked in this year and resulted in a drop in land temperatures, Albanese said.

Another cause could be Pacific decadal oscillation, a cyclical period of lower ocean temperatures that comes every 20 to 25 years.

There’s a warm phase and a cold phase of the climate pattern, Vonderheide said.

“We were in a warm phase of the Pacific decadal oscillation in the ’80s and ’90s,” he said. “(Some forecasters) believe we may have entered into the cold phase.”

If the Pacific Decadal Oscillation has flipped, than could it be that the warm phase we were in has been causing glacial melt and all of those things the Global Warming fear mongers have been pointing too as evidence of CO2 polluting the planet?

Government has it wrong!  We must fight their fight against warmer temperatures.  If they succeed in driving temperatures down with their fight against Global Warming then we may all wake up one day to a world without Summer.  That would make the Beach Boys very sad :-(

Stop Global Warming Now?

"Stop Snowing on Me Now!" or something

"Stop Snowing on Me Now!" or something

Protesters in Maryland were chanting, “Stop Global Warming Now,” while it was snowing on them!  Just kinda funny.  Not that a little snow shows that so called “Global Warming” is coming to an end, but the protesters might want to read this next story.

In Russia, they are bracing for killer cold temperatures.  They are expected to fall as low as 67 below zero F!!!  That’s air temperature without a wind chill! That’s amazingly cold.  The article explains that temps have already been 35 below and there have been a couple of fatalities.  This is in a place that is used to cold and they are closing schools and warning that the extreme cold could kill heating units.  There is also a lake in Georgia, Russia that is frozen over for the first time in 50 years.

Greenland is also experiencing extreme cold.  There is a bay frozen 10 centimeters thick for the first time in decades there.  One very cold Winter doesn’t mean for sure we are back on the down swing in temperatures, but considering what I have blogged about the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and the Russian scientist who says the Sun is coming out of a “warm” cycle, we could see protesters changing their tune from, “End Global Warming Now,” to, “Send Some Global Warming Now.”  Better yet, they could join us in our efforts to STOP GLOBAL COOLING NOW!
