Global warming is the new religion of First World urban elites

says an Australian Geologist.  His views are well known.  He has written several books on the matter.  However, helping to prove his point, Ian Plimer had problems finding a publisher for his latest book.  Here’s the article.  And here’s a taste of what he is saying:

Plimer gets especially upset about carbon dioxide, its role in Earth’s daily life and the supposed effects on climate of human manufacture of the gas. He says atmospheric carbon dioxide is now at the lowest levels it has been for 500 million years, and that atmospheric carbon dioxide is only 0.001 per cent of the total amount of the chemical held in the oceans, surface rocks, soils and various life forms. Indeed, Plimer says carbon dioxide is not a pollutant, but a plant food. Plants eat carbon dioxide and excrete oxygen. Human activity, he says, contributes only the tiniest fraction to even the atmospheric presence of carbon dioxide.

There is no problem with global warming, Plimer says repeatedly. He points out that for humans periods of global warming have been times of abundance when civilization made leaps forward. Ice ages, in contrast, have been times when human development slowed or even declined.

So global warming, says Plimer, is something humans should welcome and embrace as a harbinger of good times to come.

Seattle has Hottest Day Ever!

Well, since records have been kept, 1891.  It hit 102 today.  That’s historic indeed!  Here’s the full story.  Here’s an excerpt:

The previous all-time record high was 100 degrees and was set on July 20, 1994, at Sea-Tac Airport and on July 16, 1941, when records were kept downtown at the Federal Building. Weather records for Seattle began in 1891.

The average high temperature on this date is 76 degrees.

One reason it’s so hot is persistant high pressure over the West.  That is being balanced out by the unusually cold Summer in the Midwest and Northeast.  Another reason could be your committment to Flatulant Friday’s!  Thank you for warming things up around here!

Don’t worry about the folks in the Pacific Northwest.  They have a lot of cool rivers, lakes and streams to jump into to cool off.

Chicago Sees Coldest July in 67 Years

And it’s even worse then that.  67 years ago the official thermometer was at the cooler lakefront.  Even with the thermometer in a warmer location this July in Chicago was unusually cold:

Even in the years before 1942, when the National Weather Service recorded temperatures at the cooler lakefront, there are only three years that had colder Julys through the 26th.

There have also been far more days than usual with high temperatures less than 80 degrees this year. In 2009, there were 13 days where the temperature did not exceed 80 degrees. Only three Julys in the past 67 years have had more days in Chicago with highs less than 80 – there were 18 such days in 1992, and 14 in 1996 and 2000.

We have also failed to reach 90 degrees at any time this month.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think the global warming computer models predicted this.  Hmmmm.

New Study Says Global Warming (and cooling) is Natural

Who knew?!  Oh, yeah.  We did.

In case you are still on the fence, here is a bit more information to consider.  Seems that years with El Nino are warmer.  Years without are cooler.  When there is volcanic activity on the planet it’s just cooler either way!

Here’s a link to an excellent blog analysis of the study.  Here’s an excerpt:

“The surge in global temperatures since 1977 can be attributed to a 1976 climate shift in the Pacific Ocean that made warming El Niño conditions more likely than they were over the previous 30 years and cooling La Niña conditions less likely” says corresponding author de Freitas.

“We have shown that internal global climate-system variability accounts for at least 80% of the observed global climate variation over the past half-century. It may even be more if the period of influence of major volcanoes can be more clearly identified and the corresponding data excluded from the analysis.”

That condition in the Pacific that made El Nino more likely and La Nina less likely?  The Pacific Decadal Oscilation flipped to a warm phase.  At the same time, the Sun entered a more active period.  No wonder it was almost as hot from the mid 80′s to 1998 as it was in the 30s and 40s.  Almost.

Now that the Pacific Decadal Oscilation has flipped back to a cold phase (just 2 or 3 years ago) and the Sun is very quiet, expect colder years ahead.   No wonder this may be the coldest Summer on record in parts of the Midwest this year.  If a volcano or two decides to get active it may get even colder in the next few decades.

3,000 Record Lows in July!

AccuWeather.com has the story.  An unusually cold July over much of the country.   Is that what the global warming computer models predicted?  Somehow, I doubt it.

Basically the entire country east of the Mississippi is below normal for the month.  One place in Pennsylvania is 10 degrees below normal while much of Wisconsin sits about 8 degrees below normal!  Chicago, Boston, Albany, NY have yet to see a day over 85 this July.
